Salk addition

Design Process

01
Identify the problem

Salk exists as a complete architectural whole, and its formal clarity resists expansion. Any addition risks feeling intrusive.

02
Respond to the need

Because Salk hosts many visiting researchers each year, the project provides a necessary extension of that life: guest researcher laboratories on the first floor and residential spaces on the second.

03
reveal trhough tension

By borrowing and reworking Salk’s own pattern language, the intervention becomes neither foreign nor submissive. It coexists with Salk while also defying its resistance, revealing the existing institution in a new way.

Materiality

The material palette draws from Salk while creating a warmer architectural atmosphere. A sandstone-toned concrete with a subtle yellow cast connects the project to Salk’s concrete language, while roasted eucalyptus panels add a darker warmth and depth. Standard double-glazed glass is used to bring light, transparency, and performance to the building.
